The Great Escape: A Canadian Story by Ted Barris

The Great Escape: A Canadian Story, by Ted Barris, 320 pages

This year, we are blessed to have Ted Barris as our speaker, who will be talking about the real story of the Great Escape. Many people have seen the movie, but that told a fictionalized account. Through interviews, research, and assembly of letters, diaries, and photos, Ted Barris has uncovered the real story behind the movie. On November 6, he will recount what actually took place in 1944 in this nearly-mythical escape operation from Stalag Luft III, and how the Great Escape really is a “Made in Canada” story.

Ted Barris is an accomplished author, journalist and broadcaster. As well as hosting stints on CBC radio and contributing to the National Post and to various national magazines, he has written seventeen non-fiction books. He is a full-time professor of journalism and broadcasting at Centennial College. In 2011 he received the Canadian Minister of Veteran Affairs Commendation and in 2012 the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
