Barbecue for Sandy Bay

A great day – and a great project

Mark and Damien are the masters of the grill

Thank you to everyone who came out for our barbecue in support of the Sandy Bay school renovation project.
Not only was it a great day to be enjoying food cooked outdoors, we have hit a milestone in raising funds to begin the work to bring the first phase to reality.

Working hard, Mark and Damien grilled hamburgers and hotdogs for everyone. It was a wonderful summer day. Some folks enjoyed the sun while others took advantage of shade offered by the trees.

The great news is that on the fundraising side, we’ve almost hit our goal of $12,000 for the first phase of the renovation, which will see the plumbing and washroom facilities at the Sandy Bay school repaired and brought up to date. The next steps for phase 1 are to arrange the purchase of building supplies in Jamaica, engage a professional contractor in Jamaica, and to plan for volunteers from St. John’s to travel to Sandy Bay to assist with the work.

While the volunteers are there, they’ll be working with the principal to look at what else we can do to support the school. There is more work to be done on the building and grounds, such as redoing the roof and improving the playground, and there are ideas for working with the teachers and the children, such as replenishing the book library and setting up a system for pen-pals between the Sandy Bay children and people of St. John’s congregation.
