Lessons from the Lemonade Stand

Rev. Tim (left) and a commuter at the afternoon lemonade stand.

The arrival of both the new lawn furniture and the new curate created an opportunity to get to know some of our neighbours. During the afternoon commute, I have been sitting on the new furniture with a couple of jugs of lemonade and ice water. When commuters walked up the path on their way home, I offered them a glass.

The response has been rewarding! Although many are listening to music, most pull the ear bud out of an ear and are pleasantly surprised that someone is speaking to them. (I have yet to have anyone just ignore me.)

And in several cases, people have taken the time to sit down and have a pleasant conversation. Topics have ranged from the impact of spiritual health on overall health management, to meeting a young man enrolled in Trinity College this Fall, to a young family from Bolivia who have just moved into the neighbourhood and are looking for a church community.

It seems that many people are happy to talk about their faith journey – even with a stranger wearing a clerical collar! Over the course of the summer, I hope to continue being out front on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 pm to 5:30 pm. If you get a chance, drop by, say hello, and have some lemonade!
