From May 25 to 27, the Ontario Guild of English Handbell Ringers (OGEHR) is hosting its annual festival, and St. John’s handbell ringers are taking part. McMaster University in Hamilton is the site of this year’s festival, which runs for three days from Thursday, May 25 to Saturday, May 27.
This year’s theme is United we Ring from C to C to C, in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary. We live proudly as one nation, united from sea to sea to sea, and as proud handbell ringers, OGEHR members ring from C to C to C. Hence the theme.
St. John’s York Mills is noted for its handbell program which now has four choirs – three on handbells and one on handchimes. Twenty of our handbell musicians are participating in the festival, where they attend workshops, learn from experts, share insights and stories with other attendees, and enjoy some socializing.
The highlight of the three-day event happens on Saturday evening, when 400 ringers take to the stage for the festival concert. The concert happens at Burridge Gym in the David Braley Athletic Centre at McMaster University, starting at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available to the public for $20 each; you can find more information and buy tickets here.
