Nov 18: Massey Lecturer Speaks

Payam Akhavan, a renowned human rights lawyer and 2017 CBC Massey Lecturer, will be speaking at St. John’s on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.

Professor Payam Akhavan: In Search of a Better World

Payam Akhavan set out on a noble mission, traveling to Sarajevo with the UN 20 years ago to help promote justice and to bring war criminals to trial. His idealism was severely tested by the realities of capturing and trying leaders for crimes against humanity, and he returned as a changed person struggling with his own moral values.

Payam Akhavan has been selected as the 2017 CBC Massey Lecturer. His second lecture was titled “In Search of a Better World” (a recording can be heard at the CBC website). It combines a history of what happened with an astute analysis of what drove those events, and whether or not it is even possible to bring justice in the face of such horror.
