1:30 p.m.: Part of a global community
On Friday March 2, 2018, Christians from 170 countries come together in spirit for a day to learn from people of other countries and cultures, to understand how they live the Christian teachings, and to pray about issues affecting the women and children in those countries. The motto of the World Day of Prayer is:
Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action
This year, St. John’s York Mills has been selected as one of the churches in Toronto to host a World Day of Prayer service. Join us as we welcome congregants from area churches for an afternoon of music and words, of fellowship and prayer. The service begins at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2.
Suriname: International Host
Each year, a country is chosen to be the focus of the World Day of Prayer. For 2018, Suriname has been selected as the international host, and members of the Suriname World Day of Prayer Committee have prepared the service. The theme for this year’s service is:
All God’s Creation is Very Good!
Artist Alice Pomstra-Elmont of Suriname created the theme image: a hand symbolically receiving the divine gift of Creation. She says, “Let us keep it as beautiful as we received it.” About 90% of Suriname’s people live on the coast of the country, many on land less than two metres above sea level. The interior of the country is pristine tropical rainforest.
As you get ready to pray in solidarity with the people of Suriname, ponder what actions you might take to nurture God’s creation for future generations.
World Day of Prayer: 100 Years Strong
The World Day of Prayer movement was founded in 1918 and celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The movement is a global ecumenical event that brings Christians around the world together for a common day of prayer, understanding, and deepening of faith. The service for the 2018 World Day of Prayer was prepared by the World Day of Prayer Committee of Suriname. It has been adapted for use in Canada by the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada.
