With our handbell program, people of all ages and musical skill levels have the opportunity to learn to read music and play a unique instrument, to gain confidence being a part of a music ensemble, and to have a little fun as a group along the way.
St. John’s has two handbell choirs:
Brass Ringers | 13 and up | Mondays 6–7:15 pm | Some musical skill required
Ingram Ringers | Adults | Mondays 7:15–9:15 pm | Some musical skill required
Under the direction of Carolyn Martin, the handbell choirs keep a busy schedule of performing in the community as well as for church services. Meetings begin the week after Labour Day and run until the beginning of June. Ringers take part in festivals organized by the Ontario Guild of English Handbell Ringers (of which we are a member) and the Handbell Musicians of America.
We welcome people who wish to give ringing a try; you do not have to be an SJYM member to take part in the handbell program! The technique can be picked up fairly quickly but takes time and practice to become a relaxed and confident ensemble ringer. Knowing how to read music is an asset and will allow you to progress faster.
